fashion 2017 trends
hello, wow, that was a bit much light thats ok there we go i'm going to talk a little bit about sustainability and about the power of inspiration can we get a bit more sound is that ok? first of all to all of you i've got this bottle with me
ok, first off let me introduce myself, my name is enok. does everybody know who i am? (audience: yes..) i'm a model, and attended "anno" last years season (2015) what else have i done, a little this and that, iam a "tjuagutt" from sandviken i am an enviromentalist in a models body i thought that was a bit funny (laughter) and thats why i feel that, even though i'm a model, i have to do something more but, ehm... so...
so in 2011, when i first tried out, and ventured out in europe and became a model i started something called "fashion against climate change!" i'm going to tell you a bit more about that later, but ehm, does anyone know how many litres of water this is? 1.5 litres its the daily recommended intake, ehm, i'm not going to drink it, i just brought it to show you, this is how much water you need to drink every day. and you can drink this much water every day for 20 years to consume the same amount of water involved in making one pair of jeans 20 years, for one person.
thats pretty ridiculous and thats what i am advertising for, and i'm completely aware that its not a very good thing... so... so what do i do with my, with this industry to be able to change ehm, to alter the industri, in one way or another so i have... lets see i'm not so professional when it comes to this, but i will try, do my best. this is "ellemen" in china
from october and december last year one of the worlds biggest issues ehm probably, i'm not shure how many hundreds of thousands they produce but i've got this picture series in each of them ehm, and i'm very proud of that but i also know that, those pictures, they lead to people buying more buying more new clothes so, in a way i am proud, but in a way im contributing to overproduction or, not only that but overconsuming
and then i think, i've been thinking about this a lot how can we models, that is should i quit being a model because i am an enviromentalist? or should i continue being a model? i've talked a lot with people about this and what i landed on i want to keep being a model even though i have to say no to a lot of jobs, i said no to master chef, they didnt want to use ecologic food that cost me 10 thousand a day, because i would have won as everybody knows. at least almo... well at least i tried so its like 10 thousand a day to participate in a tv program, swell stuff, but i said no. so im in a way, i have principles but sometimes i say yes, so its like... i'm thinking
after all the conversations i've had with people, my coclusion is that i want to have more to say, where i am now, as a public face, that you will see in magazines again, than if i were to just sit at my cabin, with my fireplace and think that everything is ok with the world. there is more than enough models that dont give a f*** about the enviroment, that dont care at all and thats where the problem lies, we need to get everyone, at least a lot of people more people than there are here tonight, everone here does a very important job. but we need to involve absolutely everyone, to do something, at least a little bit. only then can we do it. not everyone has to save the world, but we need enough people engaged. we have to get enough people involved, and how do we do that?
proparbly a lot of you here that has thought about it, how can we get every single one walking in the streets to do something about the enviroment. i've got the answer, actually i dont have the answer to everything, i dont believe that i have, but i've talked to a psychiatrist. that came to visit bergen, and she actually changed the way i am, as an enviromentalist what she said, that was so different from what i used to do, was that, she said that: "one has to be 4 times as positive, as one is negative" in order to get people to... ehm... accept your attitude towards certain things, and actually get on board with what you are saying so for example, im betting there is a lot of enviromentalists in here tonight. am i right
let me hear a little roar. right, lots of enviromentalists that makes me really happy ehm... out in the streets, theres a bit fewer enviromentalists. but, ehm...so we can either walk up to them and say: you are going to become vegan! you are going to become a vegetarian! i am a vegetarian now... almost, completely but i've come to realize that the way i were before, i were very much like: you are a problem, and you are a problem! i didnt actually say that directly to people but i acted a bit negatively, i werent positive enough.
actually i was 4 times, maybe 10 times more negative when i talked to people but since we are all enviromentalist here tonight, i can say exactly how the status quo is in the fashion industry but, if i'm talking to someone that disagrees with me, and they arent enviromentalists then i have to be 4 times more positive.this is a skill i've learned myself. i cant always pull it off, actually i almost never pull it off. but i try, i always try to say that: there is hope here, we can actually do something here. you are the solution, right. simply, we cant do anything without the help of other people, it's people that are the solution to this enormous problem, simply. so this is a thing i want you to think about when talking to new people, that arent enviromentalists, be positive, include them, get them to be a part of, and do something
even if its just growing a little flower, or starting with zero waste, or anything. there is always something each individual can do, the clue is that they need to feel a part of something that they are contributing to saving the world. we cant let them think that they are a part of the problem they are a part of the solution! at least thats what i believe. i was going to...thank you. (applause) i was going to show you a few pictures from the previous year of my carreer there is a lot going on because i meet a lot of people, and sometimes, or actually all the time i drive them crazy talking too much about how they need to get more involved in enviromentalism
that they need to accquire more ecological clothes and so on. this is from a designer from denmark who i worked with in january i'm going down there again soon, and 66% of the clothes she makes is made out of ecological cotton also she makes almost only black clothes, wich means that all her textiles that arent used, get used over in the next production. that means that they are sewn into new altfits, in addition to, ehm... yeah, but i've said, you need to have 100% ecological clothes, and use a lot more naturfriendly fibres, and as everybodu knows, cotton is a extremely uncool textile. i'm guessing that you've read about cotton, its about 50% of all the clothes in the world, is made from cotton
and every year, 10 billion clothes are made, for us. in my opinion, the catwalk we had here earlier, is the coolest catwalk i've seen in my entire life, with the finest of people and the finest of clothes. right? and this catwalk didnt cost the enviroment anything, but shows that it is possible to do something else than just producing, producing, producing. because, nobody in here bought ten new clothes last year. at least i didnt. so i think that we now have a industry that we have to change completely, in the food industry there is actually something being done, there is ecology, zero waste, etc...
but within the clothing industry, i can tell you that nothing is being done. there are a couple of designers, stella mccartney, red carpet green dress is one of them. and there are, there are things that is happening, i'm not going to lie completely either. but i'd wish the change would come a lot quicker. and that is something i want to work for. actually i recently met vivian westwood, in paris she was an awe of inspiration, and lets see, i got to take a picture with her. i'll just go a bit further, it's a different picture, this is a photo from "anno" this is way off topic, lets just go on, i met paul watson, in ehm, yeah, in march i think in paris also, i invited him to dinner and he actually showed. he came to talk about sustainability with me
btw, he sends his regards to "kurt'n", an old acquaintance. ehm... this is earlier... i tried being a politician, it didnt go to well. especially when you go out in the local newspaper (bt) and say: don't vote for me!!! i dont want to be a politician, i dont think it would suit me. but i'm very good friends with this one i have to say that, we need absolutely every initiative, i never talk bad about zero waste, bellona etc or anyone else for that matter, perhaps i should have learned more about the organizations from "kurt'n" then maybe i would say more negative things about them, but the thing is that,
what i feel is that we need absolutely all of them. if you create an initiative in the kindergarden you work in for recycling stuff, stop consuming, etc but we need political initiatives too, and we need to get more involved, we cant just sit down and think the battle is won cause the battle is only won if we keep on fighting, this is an ongoing battle wich will go on and on. it has to become a lifestyle, and we need to make it fun to be enviromentalists and to preserve the enviroment. because, nowadays you think, you consume this and this much, have you noticed, in airports, news etc for example, this is the price of flying, this much co2 emission does a flight (bergen) to new york produce. but i think that it's important to make people feel the joy of saving energy, to spare the enviroment of something.
i think that i would rather preserve the rainforest than buying new clothes and thats a pretty, whats it called, when me as a model advertising clothes can say something like that it's like... double standards, yeah, fantastic, thank you. but it actually is just that but, ehm, isnt there an expression that goes: it's better to have double standards than no standards? i'm not shure if thats true either. but i want to at least do my part, right. lets move a little along. this is from a course i had about how can be able to educate yourselfes to work in the fashion industry, in the future. because as of now it is the worlds second most horrible industry this can obviously be argumented with that the breeding industry, oil industry, or coal industry is worse
but it is in fact in fashion half of the chemical consumption in the world is used ehm, no, not that much, lets say maybe 20%, i'm not completely shure, but ehm, large quantities. with very large carbon footprints in this industry so here i had a very inspiring course, and it was very cool to be a part of, and maybe say a couple of wise words to ehm, yeah, 18. 19 and 20 year olds about working in fashion in the future because, being a model is not a piece of cake, it's essential to know a thing or two before you try. this is for, ehm... i just have to say, the reason for me experiencing these things, this is for the rainforest fund. because we tried to make a little whirl about their fundraising, so we were on an island outside bergen and they, ehm, this sleepover we had out there, and to see the northern lights, whilst everyone else was asleep
it was a fantastic experience, it must have been one of the best days of my life and it cost the enviroment basically nothing to do, i could have travelled to new york instead but do you know what? this gave me meaning, being able to do work for the rainforest fund. so these are things that i experience that i am very glad that i am able to so i got my face painted like the indians do that was also very beautyful to see, the different painting and different stuff. like that, yeah oh, fantastic. i just get a little warm inside. yes, this is from that campaign in denmark, barbara imogini wich i have been nagging on to become 100% enviromental friendly.
and here is, right before i left. i attended the tv-fundraiser for the rainforest fund. so i received this list i thought it was kind of weird, because i am a model, but i dont generate any revenue, we arent exactly rich. then i see the name ole robert reitan. one of norways richest men, right besides my name i think that is just hysterical. but i'm certain that i am more happy than he is. completely 100% shure. even if he's got all those money. it must be said that he does a lot for the preserving of the rainforest here you have me on nrk and of course i brought a sword, to create some entertainment. and, lets see...
yes and, does anyone know who this is? this guy? but he is in fact a incredible, ehm, it is he's a really good friend of sting's and he, ehm is a indian chief from brazil a fantastic man, it's not a real bear btw, we just brought him with us for fun. then i travelled to mongolia in october, where i also worked for a brand, and its here it is here that i have to make a choice, i get a question: do you want to go to mongolia to work there
so i thought, oh well, i wanted to travel by train. it was my first thought, i will take the trans siberian railway. because it reduces the impact on the enviroment, and also because it is proparbly insanely cool even if it takes a wee or two. but, then they say that i have to travel by plane, because they cant wait that long, suddenly the embassy closes... so i had to travel by plane but, i also got the knowledge that can everybody hear me, i dont think i am taliking into the microphone they also let me know, that in mongolia, i were to work for a designer who, or where the collection was called 22 this is because there are 22 bears left of a specific rase, and on the backside of the garmins there were sewn
pictures in of large bears. so it's like, i see that designers arent like they used to be or that is, some of them, they change, even if they produce some quantities of clothes maybe not so much sustainable, but at least they are doing something, putting the focus on some areas these are the areas i believe the clothing industry can be used because there is a lot of focus on designers, beacause there is a lot of pictures of models and so on that are in different places so it's like through the channels that they have available. designers and models, we are often in the media. in fact we don't actually have a choice, it's our duty to try and do something. this is a solar celle panel in the middle of the deepest mongolia. it was cool and made me happy to see.
it's the little things that make me happy. i can travel by hundreds of these cabin without a panel, but when i see one or two with a panel, i'm in ecstacy. here we are at bloomberg, a tv-channel for, whats it called, financial stuff, i dont know that kind of stuff. but, i sat and talked for like 30 minutes with the journalist about sustainability and eco-friendly fashion i dont think she was all that interested, but it was fun to get to say something about that i dont know if they actually aired it though, i only received this photo. but, i hope they at least included a couple of sentences about sustainability. so here is from the catwalk we did in mongolia for twentytwo, for the bears. then suddenly i was in paris, ehm on the way home, and talking about the power of inspiration.
has anybody heard of this guy, he is just a lovely character, oh my god. sustainaclaus! this guy, i'm laughing my pants off because of this guy. this santaclaus thing he runs, this is a brand thats been built by coca-cola i am way over my time here, i'm well aware of that, you are allowed to leave. i can just continue, ok. sustainaclause is a delightful character, you can find him on the internet he has this rule where he tells everyone he meets to hold up three fingers, and he will take selfies with them. appearantly every wednesday, you have to do something new, positive and it needs to make a change in your life. he is totally awesome, and has taken selfies with an insane amount of celebrity's over the times and everone knows the 3 rules, that every wednesday they have to do something new
something positive, it might be for someone else, think good and do something for the planet. so this guy is incredible cool, i just loved him from the moment i saw him, i just thought please let me find sustainaclause again. and there is only millions of people in paris then suddenly on one of my last days in paris, i find him. so i just hanged out with him the whole day, because he is incredibly inspiring. and i dressed up in a, he had several suits with him, so i just had to take a picture. we met vivian westwood later on that evening and that is, by my standards, one of the designers on this planet that does everything she is one of my biggest rolemodels, she really just says it like it is, she is almost 70 years now,
and yeah, google her name, you've proparbly heard what she has to say but she has her own organisation, and what she says with regards to it is unrealistic to believe that we are going to end the fashion industry the fashion industry... i actually meet these kind of people that say: erh, that stuff is unimportant nobody needs fashion, nobody needs clothes etc but, i see fashion as fine art, and i believe that it can be done right. we need to do a lot so what she says is that buy less of my clothes, she actually says that. buy fewer clothes, buy good quality and think through the deals you are doing. is it something you need, will it last? she really does a lot of good, so check her out: vivian westwood.
i'm very happy to have met with her. this is also from paris, the redline march. this was a bit cool it is important to take chances in life, i'm in the middle here and this is paul wagner, he called himself "first nations people" or how do you say, he didnt want to be called "native american" but like they are a little like, we can't call the touchy either but, they like to be called "first nations people" aborigines, can we say that in norwegian, yes. yes correct, so he ehm... i strolled his speaker all the way, and this was just one of the best days of my life i have a great deal of respect for him, and suddely there was about 20 journalists around us filming
and listening to him talk about how we have to take care of the planet. also, out of the blue we ended up on "-fresco news". that was very cool. i hadnt expected that. yes, so here we see, right at the end here of my photoseries that might have bin a tad too long. here we have a shoe, can anyone see it? it is a sole, does anybody know what it is made from? yes plastic, does anybody know where it was found? yes, this is adidas's shoe from last year found amongst other garbage derived from the sea. that actually says a lot, that so big brands are actually doing stuff for the enviroment
not only that they take the plastic out of the ocean, wich they proparbly made in the first place a lot of the garbage, but the thing is that they are putting focus on the fact that there is a lot of trash in the sea. by doing things like this. adidas is proprbly one of the biggest jeans, no i mean shoe brand. actually i found this right before i came here, it's the reason why i was a little late, i just had to bring this, i didnt know that adidas had produced shoes out of trash. very cool. and so, it's like, i have, by being sort of going out on my model sites, right, on the agencys sites and writing, they. sometimes they ask me, or what to say, i havent talked about this before so its difficult to articulate ehm, sometimes you have to state your position on things, like you have to write a sentence that you want to or you have to write something on your blog or their website
so i wrote on my american website that i think that everyone should be able to live without a car. and it is quite obvious that when i write something like that, mercedes benz is not going to hire me so, in that way i've established myself as an enviromental model or, that doesnt really exist, but at least a model which takes certain stands. laying down demands, i dont work for just anyone. recently a underwear manufacturer, believe it or not that asked if they could work with me, so i said: what is it made from? "it's cotton" so i was like: where is the cotton from? "appearantly it's from china" me: is it ecological? they werent quite certain of that, so they checked up on it and it wasnt. me: not interested because i know that 100% of the cotton produced in china and india is genetically modified.
that causes incredibly large problems, and this is some advisei want to give you, keep away from cotton in general, especially if it comes from china or india or the united states. so cotton is a terrible material that has a lot of, hemp for example, is a really good opposite, or feedstock that can be used in many things, and that ehm, even bamboo is a lot better than cotton that much i can say, so after saying no to several advertising campaigns and so on suddely "replay" appeared and said that they wanted to do something with some enviroment stuff they were going to make a jeans with 85% less water thats about 11.000 litres, and they were only going to use 15% of that pr jeans they produced pretty low compared to other jeans brands.
so then i became very happy, almost like i've never been before because it was a pretty big brand and i really wanted to work for them, and we also made this video that was the commercial photos whoops i just have to find, lets see they also wanted to make jeans without any chemicals at all but of course i didnt know at that time that, for us models there is so little information available. can we get a little sound here too? is that possible? for us models, there are so little information available we dont get any information about the brands, before we get to work for them
so i didnt know that "replay" is one of the worst brands in the world, they are on the lower rank amongst those of those who actually do something for the enviroment of course i didnt learn of this until after i did this thing, so in a way you can call this a greenifying of that i was a part of greenifying, but all thing have positive and negative effects. like, positively speaking, it can contribute to making other brands think more about being eco-friendly so yeah, i'm... and maybe they see replay's stunt and think they need to do something similar this is a trend we need to make money on... so i'm going to play this for you what do i do? i dont use computers a lot, lets see therre we go
is there any sound? but it was this machine that played audio earlier... the sound from youtube is on max, can you fix it? one would think i was 80 years old... thank you let me just stop this before it continues playing the next video and stuff. some games, and some tanks shooting each other, terrible stuff... but as said before, i believe that by doing what i do, i am making a difference, and i believe that you can do too i believe that you are making a difference by being exactly who you are,
and by being interested in doing something for the enviroment. also, in order to finish iwould like to say that the thing that have made me not having to buy as much stuff as other people of course i get to keep some of the clothes made by the designers i work for but, i buy a lot of vintage stuff, this watch for example, i bought this belt at the eco-market. yay, ehm a long time ago, you can find a lot of good stuff there, believe it or not but it is actually that, since i've experienced what it was like to live in the 18th century, and how life was it was a strange feeling coming back to the regular world. i notet a few things noted that 1: how wast amounts of manipulation we are subjected to trough advertising
and trough newspapers and tv's that are constantly on telling us how dangerous everthing is all the dangers, like, everything is dangerous right virus, bacterias and yeah, it was like, its not that dangerous. we made it 2.5months and nobody got sick there werent one that showed hints of a cold, and we were there for 2.5 months almost without cleaning ourselfes. nobody showered for about 2.5 months, almost... so when i got home it was like, i'm not going to pump up this water? just turning on the fosset was weird, turning a knob and hot water comes out? we had to first pump it, then we had to heat it up... totally crazy, so it's like the little things, the joy of the absolute minute.
if it is the things that you dont need to do because you dont have to struggle as much or because you know that you dont have to walk 2km to collect water, you can just get it, strait from the fosset the joy of the little thing, have anybody thought about. the last thing i'm going to say is that: have any of you thought about how lucky you are to have two feet? i stood on a mountain once, not just any mountain but the one and only "stoltzekleiven" i stood right by the arrow, and i stood there enjoying the view, it was a beutyful day do you remember that large expensive boat that anchored up down on the water this summer? it was there way to long, i think it was two months or something they stayed in town. the entire summer. and i overheard some youngsters saying stuff like: i would do anything to get a boat like that.
"i wish i was that rich" so i was like: do you know what? i'm more happy than the people who owns that boat! do you know why? they replied: what? you cant be more happy. i replied: because i've got two legs! i've managed to walk up onto this mountain, and i get to see the view. this is happiness to me. so thats one thing i would recommend, think about how happy you should be just be thankful that you have two legs, because not everybody does. and what you are doing is working, stay strong and steady in the battle for the enviroment thanks for having me! lets see, we are actually done now, for now of course, there is more happening troughout the evening. w'll be back here at eleven, you can join to meet everybody
and something added perhaps, but now it is actually it's true what enok says, it's not that each of us has to do so damn much to cause a change in those around us very often it doesnt take much. but this day would not have happened if not for turid and sara, that have done very much aaaand, we can all try to do something, getting engaged in some organizations there is more than enough to sink your fingers into, if you are attempting to create new cultures etc... maybe a little less consumptions and these sort of things so i'm just thinking, good luck everyone, we can make this happen if we just do something! thank you!(applause)
