(engine revving) - this is the brand newcorvette grand sport. the c7 corvette has beenout for three long years and we've had a bit of a lovehate relationship with it. however, this could be the happymedium, goldilocks corvette because it has the z06'swide body and suspension, and the naturally aspiratedv8 from the stingray. also, painters tape onthe uh, front fender. - this is the new carrera s,
the one with two turbochargers bolted to it's three-liter flat-six. some of you watching might say, well, that's an odd comparison, 911 versus a corvette, to which i'll say, hey, it's a classic. not only that if you goback to the very first head 2 head we ever filmed, it involved a then new, 991-911,
versus a c6 grand sport. and well, the floorshould punch that chevy right in the mouth. however, fast forward 82episodes and here we are again. is history going to repeat itself? - there's only one way to find out. - that's my line, dude. (upbeat music) waking the dead,
yes, please! - yeah, buddy! pulling off the reins, give me all you got! - [jason] both porscheand chevrolet make a bunch of different modelsfrom their sports cars, by mixing and matching justa few basic configurations. like i said, the grand sportis the low horsepower engine, with the wide body, why would you want less power?
well, frankly the z06's super-charged v8, makes more power than the car can handle. that's especially problematic because, the car's barely controllablewhen you're not on the power. luckily, the grand sport hasit's own suspension tuning, with magneto-rheological shock sets somewhere between the regularcorvette and that z06. it also has gm's electronicallycontrolled locking diff and this one has a seven-speed manual.
it also has the z07 package, which gives it an aero kit for greater downforce, carbon ceramic brakes, and meticulously grippy tires. - [johnny] the new porsche carrera, dubbed the 991.2, is a major refresh of the 991 version of the 911. the big news is of course the engine, which now sports two turbo-chargers, just like the porsche turbo.
only, don't call this car the turbo. the base carrera model israted at 370 horsepower. however, as this beautifulmiami blue baby is a carrera s, power is rated at 420 horsepower. we asked porche for a carreras with a manual transmission, but all they had layingaround was this car, with a seven-speed porsche doppelkupplung. this particular carrera shas just about every single performance option you can spec,
which will help the 911out on the test track, in the canyons, and on the race track. - forward, forward, forward, forward, stop! perfect, keep going back, back on the plate, stop! yeah, good enough. and the corvette grandsport weighs, 3464 pounds. and since this is thesame miami blue carrera s, we tested at best driver's car, we know that weighs 3353 pounds,
which is a difference of 111 pounds. corvette however, has 40 more horsepower, about 97 more pound feeted torque, and the tires are this wide. - yeah, but it's also got a clutch pedal, which means it's slower off the line, slower in acceleration. - if they were both auto, i think it would be apretty close drag race,
i think this guy's going towin, but let's race 'em anyways. who knows? - i mean, it's not going to hurt anything. - anything can happen. - right? - porsche's for a long time now, have just been smokin' corvettes, even in a straight line. go figure, i can't explain it. well, i could explain it,
it's like more weight over the rear tires and all that kind of stuff. but, this one, he's dead,no chance, absolutely dead. - i have no chance of keeping up. ready to get your ass handed to ya? - oh, you're getting out of the corvette and into something quicker? - you ready? (car engines rev)
alright, i'm going to county down. two, one, go. (tires screach) - [johnny] goodbye! - [jason] oh! - i mean, i've literally smoked him. he's becoming smallerand smaller and smaller in my rear view mirror. yeah, no chance, dead, just completely dead.
dead, dead meat, no chance. - i got a perfect launch and ya beat me. - i crushed you. you've been annihilated, decimated, embarrassed, humiliated. go home, don't show yourface around here anymore. - that was way harsh. - i say we take these twoover to the figure eight and see what's what. - fine.
- [johnny] this is so good. the four wheel steering, ithink it's a game changer. i just think that this is anoption you're going to see in every sports car within a couple years, because it's just so good,it changes everything. - they programmed it so well to work with the steering angle that you've put in, so it feels naturally. the back of the car just pivots around
as if there's compliance in thebushings, or some other way, but it's stable. when you go to the gasright here, you just matted. - [johnny] yeah.- just puts all of that down. you never need four wheel drive in a 911. you never have to worryabout putting the power down. - right, well, i love it. next step is the grand sport, and i haven't been a hugefan of c7's in the past,
but hopefully, this one'sgoing to change everything. - [jason] i'm a littleworried after feeling this, because z06 is a handful, the regular stingray is alittle bit all over the place. this is a tough act to follow. - [johnny] i don't want to stopdriving it, it's just great. - [jason] oh, god. there is so much morebrake here than the 911. - [johnny] yeah, it's good, right?
- wow, this is nothinglike i expected it to be! because i expected it tobe like the z06, basically. - is it too much power? - well, i'm drivable at the limit, you fade under the power, and it just. - yeah, you're fighting therear end the entire time. - wow, this is easily, easily and by far away the best c7 corvette i've driven. - [johnny] yeah.- [jason] look at that
mid-corner balance! just four wheel driftthe whole way through, huge grip, great brake light. - these brakes are redonkulus. it's just especially in combination with the pilot sport cup 2 tires, nothing could stop the power. - who would ever think acorvette could show a 911 how it's done in mid-corner handling.
gm is the king of the skidpad these days. nobody can get close to theskidpad numbers that gm gets. and this isn't just stupid grip, like the stickiest tiresyou could possibly ever put on a car, and hope thesuspension can cope with it, it's one cohesive package. - this car feels great, but you know what? that porsche felt great too, so let's go sit down,
take a look at the numbersand see what's what. - [jason] yup. - [johnny] so, there ya have it. in a straight line, the porsche absolutelycrushes the cor-chevrolet. however, once you start talking about other performance numbers, such as braking, lateral acceleration, and our figure eight track,
the corvette kills the porsche. so, how is all of this goingto shake out on the road? let's find out. - so, before we get into a discussion about why they should've never gone turbo, let's talk about what a greatjob porsche's engineers did, turbo charging this engine. - [jason] i am not a fan of turbo's. i love this engine!
- only car i can think ofthat is basically as lag-free, is the ferrari california t, - yeah.- or the 488. and i have to go to ferrarito come up with an analog! - and what that ferrari doesn'tdo, is this anti-lag system. in sport plus, everytime you go to the gas, you hear that intake open up. you hear whuumm! - [johnny] yeah.- and what that is,
is the computer crackin' open the trottle, to get a puff of air down the exhaust, to spin up the turbo, so thatwhen you add more throttle, the boost is ready there. - it's so good, and then theydo this thing, which i love, this engine is just matchedso well to this car. in fact, on a road like this, you never even have to getup into the crazy high revs, because you're just sittingon this wave of torque,
and the sound is good enough, and you're just going and going. and then you have the all wheel steering, and it kind of like shakesit's hips to the turns. - the 911 is also thebest manual in business, i think at the moment. - it's pretty good, it's pretty good. - but this pdk. - i mean you can't sayenough nice things about it.
again, the ferrari dual-clutch, the audi r8, v10 dual-clutch. - [jason] v10 plus, yeah. and here's the thing, again we're going to a$200,000 car and a $300,000 car to come up with somethingthat's as good as the regular porsche dual-clutch. - [jason] yeah. - [johnny] it's crazy.
- the way this thing dolesout shifts in normal driving, not when you're on back roads like this, - yeah.- it's like a slick dealer in vegas, throwing cards at you, - snick snick, snick snick. - seemless, you feel none of it. it's wa ba ba ba ba ba. - it actually works as wellas the best pure automatics, - yep.
- yet, if you want tostart pulling new paddles, - it's lightning fast. - no lag, no hesitation. it's really good. i mean, look, i'm having a real hard time thinking of bad things tosay about this here 911. if i owned this car, thiswould satisfy all of my needs. right? - yeah?
- what you've got some negatives? - yeah, of course i have negatives. (laughter) - fair enough.- okay, - list 'em out. - they're little. when the 991 came out, it's power steering was electric for the first time, - [johnny] yeah.
- and nowhere near as good as the 997, the previous generation 911. - fair enough. - this is an order of magnitude better, but it's still not quiteas good as the 997's was. - okay. - also, this carunder-steers a whole lot more than the previous 991.1 did. - but i think that's right at the limit
and i think it's also thelittle bit of extra under-steer, is mitigated by the all wheel steering, so i think it's not really a big deal, and up here, it's great! - either way. - [johnny] planted. - [jason] those are tiny little complaints about what is becoming analmost perfect sports car. - the real conclusion to this car is that
that grand sport had better be perfect! there better be nothingwrong with that car because-- - [jason] how is it going to beat this? - [johnny] this is a good corvette. it's nuts! - with all that extragrip on the skid pad, is kind of wasted because while i know i canalmost always go faster, i won't.
i can't see far enougharound any of these corners to actually take advantage of this grip. - right, 'cause there couldbe a camera man, or a bear or a coyote, or a deer. - [jason] but it's nice to know that i have all that safety margin, 'cause i can't actually get to the limit. - and when you're approachingthe limit in this car, unlike the z06, thesteering's still responsive,
the back end is stillstuck, it doesn't bite you. - right, the z06 is a car thatis terrifying at the limit. so, up here in the back ofyour head, you're always like oh, it's going to biteme, it's going to bite me, it's going to bite me. this car, different. the grand sport--- [jason] totally different. - [johnny] you're just confident. - [jason] yeah.- [johnny] on the skid pad,
we know how this thing is at the limit. controllable, easy. - [jason] right, yeah.- [johnny] no problem. - and listen, the z06 hasa whole bunch more power, but it's not about that, you turn into a cornerwith that off-power, or on maintenance throttle, and you're getting closerand closer to the limit, you're fine, you'refine, you're fine, boom!
- [johnny] yeah.- it explodes sideways and you can't catch it in time. - and a lot of people are going to say, oh, it's just the power-- - [jason] no, no, no.- it's not just the power. that power is going to remindyou, hey, by the way buddy, you're sitting on a bomb. which could go off at any time. - boom!- you can induce it,
i can induce it, this car doesn't try to kill you, when you're not asking it to, - [jason] right.- [johnny] like the z06 does. - [jason] this is really, really fast and good! - [johnny] this is thebest c7 corvette to date, without question. - [jason] easy. - and it's so much fun!
- i mean, it's fun to drive! - that 911 is so good at so many things, one of the things it'snot great at is being fun. - yeah, you know, logically, it probably would makemore sense to have the 911, but you'd be driving that, daydreaming about this car. - [jason] yeah, and the fun thing is, all the 12 year olds lovethis, love the way it looks. - [johnny] oh, look at it!
- [jason] a bunch of stuff.- [johnny] yeah, listen to it! yeah! fabulous. - i mean, it's like, while it appeals to the inner 12 year old, it also appeals to the inner 40 year old, with a bank account, who can afford this car, because it's a good car now. - it is.
and look, this head 2 head is much closer, than i thought it was going to be. - way closer. - where are you sittin',who's your favorite? - i'm like 51-49. - which one?- i'm not telling you. - if you're going to playthat game, i'm going to say, i'm actually 55-45. - which way?
- i'm not sayin'. i think this is one we're goingto have to settle on the track. - i think so, i think thathas to be the tie-breaker. - you can tell by the desert scenes, we're at willow springs, in a brand new porsche 911 carrera s. it's the second generation of the 991. the 911 handling givesme a lot of confidence, without under-steering.
it's magic, it's really magic. (car revving) the balance and the roll iscontrolled into the corner. tell you what, i thinkit's better than the gt3. it's revving out right now 7,000, 7200. it pulls harder andharder as the revs grow. (rock music) just like the thenormally aspirated engine, and guess what,
when you get down to the apex, you won't lose the power. you've got more mid-range, you've got more low endpower on the street. i say this turbo engine is a real success. it's a real improvement onthe normally aspirated engine. oh, i can just put that power down! you know what, it feels a little bit like this sucker is all wheel drive!
just puts a smile on my face! so balanced! this new 911 is a complete success. very fast, and it's going to be a real challenge for the new corvettegrand sport to keep up. the last time i was atwillow springs in a corvette, it was the z06, 650 horsepower monster. and it was diabolical.
now we're in the grand sport, and it's a much easier car to drive fast. the speeding is not threatening. this car has got a great balance of it's handling grip and it's horsepower. whereas the z06 feelsa little overpowered, the grand sport feels just right. woo! compared to the 911, onething sticks out right away,
the corvette obviouslyhas a much stickier tire. this michelin pilot sport cup 2 is as close as you can get to a race tire, for the street right now. i can trust this car under acceleration. it's putting the power down really well, so does the 911. they're actuallycomparable in that regard. tell you what, i am notsure which one of these cars
is going to be faster around the track. (dramatic orchestral music) - [johnny] as we stated, randy absolutely loved thepretty blue 911 on track. it's combination of power, control, and driver confidence allowed randy to set a lap in a carrera 2 that's quicker than a 991 turbo s and a 991 gt3. we're all still sortof scratching our heads
over that last bit. hats off to porsche for a shocking amount ofengineering excellence. - [jason] however, sincethe cars were so close, we agreed we'd settle thishead 2 head on the track. and even though that pretty blue thing is the fastest 911 that weever tested at big willow, the corvette beat it's time by more than three-quarters of a second.
in perspective, every carthat's lapped big willow quicker than this corvette, has had a six-figure base price, and more than 600 horsepower. you could say that this grandsport is an incredible value, but really it's just anincredible performer at any price. - [johnny] and there you have it. the winner of this head 2 head is the 2017 chevroletcorvette grand sport.
may this battle never end. look we know you don't have time to wait for the next episode of head 2 head that's why you need to head to motor trend on demand com that's where the latest episode always lives hi there this is the bmw 6-series gran coupe a actually it's the m version the m6 gran coupe and i think it is the
sexiest best-looking bmw they build i mean they stole pontiac old formula right lower longer wider and it is gorgeous and not only does it look great it drives great too in fact this is my favorite bmw and here comes jason driving the same car wearing the same outfit yep jason why are we dressed the same to
prove a point that you have horrible fashion sense i'm dressed like you have it you pick these up its out okay i tried to make you look like a dope and it kind of backfired good enough but the point still applies yeah underneath these two white coats are two very different things underneath that one is up hairy
matzo ball or something and underneath this is a svelte italian around look the cars look the same on the outside but they're very different underneath and i'd argue that the best 600-horsepower gran coupe is not the m6 it's the alpina b6 that's what you think however there's only one way to find out really use that tired old line again
it's a catchphrase just kind of keep repeating it over and over again that's our work so you think it's working on hi there oh no stop please please hi there hi there help hi there hi there help watch the latest episode of head 2 head right now on motor trend on demand - can you stop for a second now, i think somebody's in the trunk.

there's a very scientificreason why this is happening. - [johnny] it's stupid. - [jason] laugh at the joke, you asshole! - [johnny] it's not that funny!
